Wire Forms

Custom bent-wire components and formed wire parts – clips, pins, hooks, rings and brackets – made to your drawing.

Overview

Wire forms are components made by bending, forming and cutting wire into shapes that are not helical springs – clips, hooks, rings, pins, brackets and special-shaped parts. They replace cast or machined parts in thousands of products, saving weight and cost while providing precise spring-like function where it is needed.

Wire forming is done on CNC benders and four-slide machines that bend wire to tight angles and radii in two or three planes, with loops, offsets and twists produced in a single operation. Because no mould is needed for most shapes, wire forms are among the fastest and most economical custom parts to develop.

Our partner factory forms wire in a wide range of diameters, in carbon steel, stainless steel and galvanized wire, with stress relieving, plating or powder coating as required.

Common Wire Form Shapes

Almost any bent-wire shape can be produced. The most common families are:

Clips and retaining clips

U-shape and special clips that snap over pins, rods and panels to retain or locate components.

Hooks and S-hooks

Single and double hooks for tensioning, hanging and connecting – from light S-hooks to heavy industrial hooks.

Pins and cotter-style parts

Formed wire pins that lock, locate or hinge components in assemblies.

Rings and loops

Wire rings, D-rings and closed loops used as attachment points, spacers and seals.

Brackets and frames

Wire brackets and frames that support, guard or mount components in appliances and machinery.

Spring clips and tension latches

Formed wire parts that use the elasticity of the wire itself to apply clamping or retention force.

Special-shaped parts

Complex multi-plane bends produced to your drawing for a specific function.

Applications

  • Automotive: hose clips, brake and clutch retainers, seat components
  • Appliances: shelf brackets, clips and guards
  • Electronics: battery contacts and spring terminals
  • Furniture and bedding: wire supports and frames
  • Agriculture: fencing, trellis and equipment parts
  • Construction: masonry ties, reinforcement and hangers
  • Toys, sporting goods and hardware

Technical Parameters Explained

Wire diameter: The base wire size, chosen for strength, stiffness and fit in the assembly.

Inside bend radius: Bending wire too sharply cracks or weakens it. Bend radius is typically related to wire diameter and material hardness.

Leg lengths and angles: Critical dimensions for assembly fit – held to tight tolerances with CNC forming and gauged on inspection.

Springback: Wire springs back elastically after bending. Our tooling and programmes compensate for springback so finished parts match the drawing.

Stress relieving: Forming work-hardens the wire. Stress relieving restores ductility and removes residual stress for reliable service.

Surface finish: Plating, coating or passivation selected for corrosion, appearance and friction requirements.

Materials & Surface Treatment

Common materials:

  • Carbon steel wire – strong and economical for most parts
  • Stainless steel wire (304, 316) – corrosion resistance and hygiene
  • Galvanized steel wire – outdoor parts with basic protection
  • Music wire – high strength for spring-function parts
  • Phosphor bronze wire – conductivity and corrosion resistance

Surface treatments:

  • Zinc plating – standard indoor protection
  • Nickel plating – decorative and wear resistant
  • Powder coating – thick durable finish
  • Passivation – for stainless parts
  • Oiled – light protection before assembly

Wire forms often replace welded or machined parts, so material and coating choice directly affects cost and life. We recommend the most economical combination for your application and environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the MOQ for wire forms?

Wire forms need no moulds for most shapes, so even small batches are economical. We confirm MOQ and price with your drawing.

Q: How long does sampling take?

Prototypes are usually produced within days – CNC bending programmes are fast to set up.

Q: Can you form parts with bends in multiple planes?

Yes. Four-slide and CNC benders form parts in two or three planes in one operation.

Q: What tolerances can you hold?

Typical bending tolerances are per ISO 2768 or your drawing. Critical dimensions can be held tighter with gauged tooling.

Q: Do wire forms need heat treatment?

When forming work-hardens the wire or the part must hold a precise shape under load, we stress relieve it – we recommend this per application.
