Automotive Suspension Springs: Coil, Damper & Heavy Duty Springs

Automotive suspension springs engineered by CHENJI for ride comfort, handling and long service life on road and off-road vehicles.

Automotive Suspension Spring Solutions

Automotive suspension springs are the load-bearing elastic elements that carry vehicle weight, absorb road input and keep the tyres in contact with the ground. Distributors, workshops and vehicle builders come to CHENJI for car suspension coil springs and shock absorber springs that match original-equipment behaviour, hold their rate over millions of cycles, and resist corrosion in real road conditions. Because a suspension spring is a safety-critical part, it has to be produced with controlled material, controlled heat treatment and traceable inspection — not simply to a wire diameter.

How a suspension spring is specified

Three dimensions are most often controlled on a spring drawing: free length, solid height, and load at the installed height. The spring rate follows the standard relationship k = G d⁴ / (8 D³ n), where d is the wire diameter, D the mean coil diameter, G the shear modulus of the wire material and n the number of active coils. In practice the spring index D/d is normally kept between 4 and 12 so the spring remains manufacturable without excessive stress concentration. A spring that meets the load point but uses the wrong index will often crack or sag long before the guaranteed life.

Materials and manufacturing process

Suspension springs are made from quality spring steel chosen to suit the duty cycle. Cold-coiled springs are usually made from patented cold-drawn wire to EN 10270-1, while hot-coiled springs are commonly made from alloy spring steels such as 60Si2Mn and 51CrV4. Quenched and tempered spring steels are typically used in the range 40–50 HRC so that the spring has enough strength to carry load without becoming too brittle. Our heat treatment equipment reaches 1500 °C, and our plant runs 35 machines producing springs across a 0.1–80 mm wire diameter range.

After forming and heat treatment, suspension springs are shot peened to raise fatigue strength, then finished with a protective coating. Zinc-nickel plating, zinc flake and epoxy powder coating are common corrosion protection systems, and coated parts can be checked with salt spray testing to ASTM B117. Safety-critical springs are examined for decarburisation and surface cracks, for example with magnetic particle inspection, before they leave the factory.

Applications

CHENJI automotive suspension springs are used for front and rear axle coil springs on passenger cars and SUVs, springs matched to damper units in shock absorber and coilover assemblies, heavy duty springs for load-carrying and modified vehicles, and replacement springs for aftermarket and maintenance programs. The same material and process controls apply to prototype samples and to volume production.

Frequently asked questions

What materials are used for automotive suspension springs?

CHENJI produces automotive suspension springs from alloy spring steels such as 60Si2Mn and 51CrV4 for hot-coiled springs, and from cold-drawn patented wire to EN 10270-1, oil hardened and tempered wire to EN 10270-2, and stainless spring wire to EN 10270-3 where corrosion resistance is needed. Oil tempered carbon wire to ASTM A228 and chromium-silicon alloy wire to ASTM A401 are also used, along with chromium-silicon grades such as SWOSC-V covered by JIS G 3521.

What wire and bar diameters can you produce?

Our production capability covers a wire diameter range of 0.1 mm to 80 mm, and our heat treatment equipment reaches 1500 °C. For suspension springs, quenched and tempered spring steels are typically used in the range 40–50 HRC.

How do you improve the fatigue life of a suspension spring?

Fatigue life is improved mainly by assuring a clean, decarburisation-free surface and by applying shot peening, which raises the fatigue strength of the spring. Safety-critical parts are also checked for surface cracks with magnetic particle inspection before shipment.

What corrosion protection options are available?

Common protection systems for springs are zinc-nickel plating, zinc flake and epoxy powder coating. Coated springs can be evaluated with salt spray testing to ASTM B117 so that the finish is matched to the operating environment.

Can you make custom springs to my drawing?

Yes. We work from customer drawings and specifications, confirm tooling needs and feasibility, and can produce prototype samples to validate fit before series production. Free length, solid height and load at the installed height are the three dimensions most often controlled on a spring drawing.
