Roller Shutter Door Springs
Torsion and extension springs for roller shutter and rolling door systems – reliable counterbalance for storefronts, warehouses and security shutters.
Overview
Roller shutter door springs provide the lifting force that makes a heavy curtain easy to open. The spring is wound as the shutter closes and releases its energy to help lift the curtain when the shutter opens. A correctly sized spring means smooth, balanced movement and a long service life for the whole door system.
Two spring types are used in roller shutters. Torsion springs mount on the roller barrel and counterbalance the curtain weight directly; extension springs work in tension, usually on lighter or smaller shutters. The choice depends on curtain weight, drum diameter and available space.
We produce roller shutter springs together with our partner factory, from 2 mm to 40 mm wire, in corrosion-resistant finishes suited to outdoor and industrial installations.
Torsion vs Extension for Roller Shutters
The spring system must match the curtain weight and the drum geometry.
Torsion springs on the roller barrel
Mounted inside or beside the barrel, these springs twist as the shutter closes and store the energy needed to lift it. They are the standard for heavier commercial and industrial shutters.
Extension springs for light shutters
Stretched as the shutter closes, these suit lighter residential and small commercial curtains. Simpler to fit and economical.
Tension spring sets
Multiple springs can be combined along the barrel to spread the load evenly across the curtain width.
Corrosion protection
Shutters live outdoors, so springs are galvanized, e-coated or powder coated depending on the climate and expected life.
Applications
- Storefront security shutters
- Warehouse and logistics dock doors
- Industrial rolling doors
- Garage roller doors
- Kiosk and booth shutters
- Window security shutters
- Agricultural buildings and sheds
Technical Parameters Explained
Curtain weight: The total weight the spring must counterbalance. This is the first number needed for spring sizing.
Drum / barrel diameter: The diameter the curtain rolls onto. It converts curtain weight into the torque the spring must provide.
Torque capacity: The spring’s turning force in N-mm, matched to the curtain weight and drum diameter so the shutter balances at every position.
Wire diameter: From 2 mm to 40 mm. Wire size sets torque capacity and service life.
Cycle life: The number of open-close cycles the spring can deliver. Commercial shutters cycle far more than residential ones – tell us the usage.
Coating: Galvanizing, e-coat or powder coating protect outdoor springs from rain, salt and humidity.

Materials & Surface Treatment
Common materials:
- 82B high-carbon steel – standard torsion spring material
- 60Si2MnA alloy steel – higher strength for heavy shutters
- Galvanized spring wire – corrosion resistance without extra coating
Surface treatments:
- Zinc galvanizing – economical outdoor protection
- E-coat – excellent salt-spray performance for coastal sites
- Powder coating – tough finish for abrasive environments
- Black paint – standard indoor and light-duty finish
Roller shutters are almost always outdoors, so coating selection is as important as the spring design. For coastal or high-humidity installations we recommend galvanized or e-coated springs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the MOQ for roller shutter springs?
Small replacement orders are welcome. Production MOQ depends on wire size and coating – confirmed with your inquiry.
Q: How do I size the spring for my shutter?
We need the curtain weight, drum diameter and shutter width. From these we calculate torque, wire size and the number of springs.
Q: Which is better – torsion or extension springs for shutters?
Torsion springs on the barrel are the standard for commercial and heavy shutters; extension springs suit light residential shutters and simpler installations.
Q: What cycle life can I expect?
Life depends on wire stress, coating and usage frequency. We rate each design and can upgrade material or finish for high-cycle doors.
Q: Do you supply complete spring sets?
Yes – matched sets for the full shutter width, coated and ready to install, or per your OEM drawing.
