How to Get a Custom Spring Quote: What Manufacturers Need
The fastest way to get an accurate custom spring quote is to send the drawing or the full performance requirement in one go. Quotes stall when a request arrives with only a sketch and a wire diameter, and the supplier has to email back three times for the rest. This guide lists exactly what a spring manufacturer needs, so your first message is the only one you have to send.
The core dimensions: three numbers that matter most
Free length, solid height and load at a specified installed height are the three dimensions most often controlled on a spring drawing. If you have only partial data, send these three and the rest can be derived:
- Free length — the overall length of the spring with no load.
- Solid height — the length when the coils are fully stacked; this caps the travel.
- Load at installed height — the force the spring must produce at its working position, which is what the design is built around.
For compression springs, also give wire diameter, outside or inside diameter, number of coils and end type. For extension springs, add hook type and initial tension. For torsion springs, add leg length, direction of wind and torque at a stated angle.
Material and finish
Tell the manufacturer the product family and the environment, and the material usually follows. Common choices include music wire, alloy spring steels 60Si2Mn and 51CrV4, and stainless grades such as 302 and 316, with Inconel 718 for high-temperature service. Relevant standards include ASTM A228 for oil tempered carbon steel wire, ASTM A401 for chromium-silicon alloy spring wire, JIS G 3521 for oil tempered wire (SWOSC-V is a common chromium-silicon grade), and the EN 10270 series for cold drawn, oil hardened and tempered, and stainless spring wire. For the finish, say whether you need plain, zinc-nickel, zinc flake or epoxy powder coating — coatings affect both corrosion life and cost.
The design standard to quote against
If your application is governed by a standard, name it. EN 13906-1 covers the design calculation of helical compression springs made from round wire and bar, EN 15800 defines quality specifications for cold coiled compression springs, DIN 2093 covers disc springs, and ISO 10243 covers rectangular-section helical springs for stamping dies. Quoting against the right standard avoids surprises at inspection.
Quantity and delivery
State the annual quantity and the first-order quantity, the required delivery date, and whether you need samples before mass production. Quantity drives the process choice: small batches are usually cold coiled, large runs may justify tooling. Also list the working temperature, any load or fatigue test the spring must pass, and the inspection documents you need.
What happens after you send your request
A good manufacturer reviews the drawing against the standards above, offers the closest suitable material, calculates the rate and stress, and comes back with a price, a lead time and any design suggestions. Ask for the design check — a spring that is quoted cheaply but is over-stressed will cost far more in the field.
Why quote with CHENJI
We have manufactured springs since 2014, with 26–50 staff and 35 machines, and we handle wire diameters from 0.1 mm to 80 mm, covering compression, extension, torsion, disc springs and wire forms. We hold ISO 9001 (certificate 626024QH073R1), CRCC railway product certification (CRCC10219P11758R2M), and a Bureau Veritas factory audit (MIC-ASR2451820). Quality control is in house, with third-party inspection available on request.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What is the minimum information for a quote?
A: Free length, solid height and load at installed height, plus wire diameter and material if known.
Q: Can you quote from a sample?
A: Yes — send the sample and we will measure it and confirm the material and dimensions before quoting.
Q: What materials can you use?
A: Music wire, alloy spring steels such as 60Si2Mn and 51CrV4, stainless grades 302 and 316, and Inconel 718 for high-temperature service.
Q: What wire sizes do you cover?
A: From 0.1 mm up to 80 mm.
Q: What quality documents do you provide?
A: We hold ISO 9001 (626024QH073R1), CRCC (CRCC10219P11758R2M) and a Bureau Veritas audit (MIC-ASR2451820), and we can arrange third-party inspection.
