Garage Door & Shutter Springs: Torsion & Extension Springs for Sectional and Rolling Doors
Garage door torsion springs and roller shutter door springs sized to balance door weight for smooth manual and motorised operation.

Garage Door & Shutter Spring Solutions
Garage door torsion springs and roller shutter door springs are the counterbalance springs that make an overhead or rolling door light enough to lift by hand and safe to drive with a motor. CHENJI manufactures garage door torsion springs for residential, commercial and industrial overhead doors and roller shutter door springs for rolling shutters. Correct spring sizing balances the door weight so manual and motorised operation is smooth, and so the spring is not over-stressed — because a counterbalance spring that is wrongly sized will sag or fail long before its rated life.
How a garage door spring counterbalances a door
A torsion spring stores energy as it is wound, then releases it to help lift the door. The spring must be matched to the door weight, height and expected number of cycles: the wire diameter, inner diameter, number of coils and wind direction are all chosen together. The same torsion principle applies to a roller shutter, where the spring works about the barrel or axle to counterbalance the curtain. In both cases the goal is the same — the door should balance at mid-travel and need only a light pull to move.

Materials and manufacturing process
Garage door torsion springs are commonly made from high carbon steel wire to ASTM A229, grade 82B, which is well suited to the cyclic duty of a counterbalance spring. Roller shutter springs are commonly produced from high carbon 77B or 82B steel. After coiling and heat treatment the springs are finished to resist rust, typically oil tempered, black powder coated, zinc coated or galvanised, and supplied with cones or hooks as required. Our plant runs 35 machines covering a 0.1–80 mm wire diameter range, with heat treatment up to 1500 °C, and we work from customer drawings or a spring schedule.
Because a garage door spring is a high-cycle fatigue part, surface condition and workmanship matter. Springs are finished consistently so that the working surface is clean, and protective coatings can be checked by salt spray testing to ASTM B117 where corrosion resistance is important.
Applications
CHENJI garage door and shutter springs are used on residential sectional garage doors, commercial and industrial overhead doors, rolling shutters and roller doors for shops, warehouses and car parks, and on replacement and repair programs where a matched spring is needed. The same material and process controls apply to sample sets and to volume production.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a torsion spring and an extension spring on a garage door?
A torsion spring works in torsion and twists about a shaft above the door, while an extension spring works in tension and stretches alongside the door tracks. Both counterbalance the door weight; the correct type, wire diameter and number of coils depend on the door weight, height and the number of cycles expected. CHENJI supplies both torsion and extension springs.
What material are your garage door torsion springs made from?
Garage door torsion springs are commonly made from high carbon steel wire to ASTM A229, grade 82B, which is well suited to the cyclic duty of a counterbalance spring. Alloy grades and stainless options are also available where the application requires them.
What sizes can you produce?
Common garage door torsion spring wire sizes are about 0.207 in to 0.437 in (approximately 5.3–11 mm), with inner diameters from about 44 mm (1–3/4 in) to 152 mm (6 in) and lengths up to about 144 in. Roller shutter springs are commonly made with 5–7.5 mm wire and inner diameters of about 50.8–152 mm. Sizes are made to customer drawing or schedule.
What cycle life can a garage door spring achieve?
A correctly sized garage door torsion spring is normally rated for a cycle life of around 15,000–18,000 cycles. Because every open-and-close is one cycle, the wire size and number of coils must be matched to the door weight so the spring is not over-stressed.
What surface finishes do you offer?
Garage door and shutter springs are commonly finished oil tempered, black powder coated, zinc coated or galvanised, and are supplied with cones where required. The finish is selected to resist rust in the service environment, and coatings can be evaluated with salt spray testing to ASTM B117.
