Buying springs or railway components from a supplier you have never visited is a normal part of global sourcing — but it carries risk. The difference between a good order and a costly one is usually decided before the first batch is produced. Here are the seven checks we recommend before you place your next order with any spring manufacturer.
1. Verify the Manufacturer, Not Just the Trader
Many suppliers are trading companies that re-sell from unknown factories. Ask for the factory name, address and, where possible, a video tour of the production floor. A genuine manufacturer can show you wire drawing, coiling/winding machines, heat treatment lines and finishing equipment. If the factory cannot be identified, walk away.
2. Check Material Traceability
Every batch of springs should be traceable to its raw wire: mill test certificates, heat numbers and incoming inspection records. Ask your supplier how they track material from the wire supplier through to the finished carton. Traceability is your protection if a batch ever fails in service.
3. Demand the Right Testing Equipment
At minimum, a competent spring manufacturer has:
- Spring testing machines (load vs. deflection curves) with calibrated load cells
- Rockwell or Vickers hardness testers
- Metallographic microscopes for surface and decarburization checks
- Fatigue testing capability for critical springs
Ask for test reports, not promises. A supplier who cannot produce a load curve for a sample spring cannot control its quality in production.
4. Confirm Heat Treatment and Surface Quality
Heat treatment determines a spring’s strength and fatigue life. Ask about the process (quench and temper, oil tempering), the equipment (continuous furnaces with temperature recording) and how decarburization is controlled. Surface defects are where cracks start — shot peening, if specified, must be verified by coverage checks (e.g. Almen strip testing).
5. Inspect Coating and Corrosion Protection
The finish decides how long the product survives outdoors. Specify the coating (zinc plating with thickness and passivation, Dacromet, powder coating, oiling) and agree on acceptance criteria: coating thickness readings, salt spray test hours, hydrogen embrittlement relief baking for plated springs. These are measurable — put them in the order.
6. Review Dimensional and Functional Tolerance
Springs are defined by free length, outside diameter, wire diameter, number of active coils and load at specified heights. Confirm that the manufacturer measures all of them and that their gauges are calibrated. For railway components, dimensional tolerances and standards (AREMA, UIC, EN, GB/T) should be written into the contract, not assumed.
7. Test the First Article — Always
Before mass production, request pre-production samples and verify them independently: dimensions, load curves, hardness, coating thickness, material analysis. Only after the first article meets every point of the specification should production begin. Agree in advance on the acceptable defect level (AQL) for batch release.
